Today we welcome Broadstreet to Brantingham Park. Broadstreet come here having won 2 and lost 1 of their first 3 games, beating Bradford and Bingley and Leicester Lions before coming unstuck against Fylde. Ionians cannot say that they have had a good start to the season, narrowly losing away at Preston Grasshoppers due to a last minute penalty. The first home game against our neighbours and revivals Hull was another disappointing loss but for different reasons. We gave them far too much respect in the 1st half, played well in the 2nd, but sin binning cost us the game. This is not however to take anything away from Hull as they played a very fluid and fast game.
Last Saturday we lost our 3rd game of the season, away to Kendal. We played well up to the half time point but the second half we appeared not to be interested. Although the game was very disappointing it did highlight weaknesses in our game, which we will be addressing fully this week in training.
This week we welcome a number of injured players back to bolster the squad and give us more choice at selection time. Richard Wigham, James Ferguson and James Greene all become available for selection. With James Liddell and Dan Hague returning after being unavailable last week through work commitments.
We need to kick-start our season today and look for a marked improvement on last weeks performance. We need to be a little more ruthless when we have position in our opponents 22 and to concentrate more when we have possession. Key to our success will be our ability to concentrate and not to over complicate things.
As long as we play to our true potential and work hard I am sure the result will be in our favour and we can finally move off the bottom of the table.

HICE are Champions
Hull Ionians Coal Exporters (HICE) Cricket Club 1st Xl have won the Division 1 title in the Insurance Partnership East Yorkshire Cricket Alliance and will be promoted to the Premier Division for 2010, with the 2nd Xl finishing runners up in Division 2 and also being promoted. These achievements have made a fitting celebration of what is the centenary year of the Coal Exporters part of the merged club. The Club is celebrating 100 years of cricket (Coal Exporters 100 years and Ionians 43 years) at a Centenary Dinner on the 26 September at Brantingham Park. The 1st XI finished 8 points clear of Cottingham only losing one of their 22 matches all season. The crucial game was the home match against Cottingham when set 202 to win the target was reached off the last ball of the match for a 3 wicket victory. The 2nds also had a crucial match when playing eventual League 2 winners Beverley. After a very good start Beverley were set a target of 146 to win which they reached with an over to spare for a 5 wicket win. HICE was formed in 1996 when the two clubs came together. The club also has a 3rd XI playing on a Saturday, a midweek XI in the Howdenshire League and a junior cricket section. Anyone who wishes to enjoy a friendly game of cricket in excellent surroundings will be made most welcome regardless of their age or ability. Club History
As we are celebrating our 20th season this year I intend to include the occasional historical note in the programme. Our sponsor today is Andy Jenkinson of Thunderbird Systems which leads me back to his playing records. Andy was one of the squad of Riding players that came with the merger to form Hull Ionians in 1989. A strong running and tackling inside centre who played 140 1st XV games before retiring from 1st XV rugby having scored 196 points – though he still plays for the Ramblers on tour and referees too now, as well as being a HICE cricket player. Along with Andy, most of these original players retired after the 1996/7 season. The team for his last match v Stockton on March 8th 1997 was: Dave Redford, Rich Moorhouse, Mark Swift, Andy Jenkinson, Gareth Townend, Ben Medhurst, Carl Norfolk, Karl Wigglesworth, John Johnson, Tony Rice, Mark Kelk, Derek Falkingham, Tony Phillips, Grant Walkington, Jason Nicholson; bench: Neil Lyon, Rich Jones, Mark Randerson and Greg Bone.
