September 26th 2009 - Morley A 26 Hull Ionians Hawks
14
Another lacklustre performance from the Hawks was not enough
to defeat a smaller but a much harder working Morley side. There were some good
individual performances though, especially from some of the players starting to
return from the extraordinary injury list. In the front row, long term absentee
Albert Thundercliffe, played the first half of the game and showed just what we
have been missing. Flu victim Scott Wilson also had a very good game in the
front row. Unfortunately a completely new back row had to be fielded with two
debutants, but young Cory Neighbour (son of ex Ionians Mark) showed promise.
Andy Barrass continues to be play well in a struggling side and will surely
benefit when the side gets a bit more “go forward”. He kicked beautifully out of
hand in the first half and gave the Hawks territorial position. However, the
Morley team worked really hard to secure turnover ball and scored two good tries
from distance. I’s only response was a well taken try by ex Halifax winger Olly
Marns, who with his handling and running looked a class above on club debut. It
was also pleasing to see Danny Waddy back at inside centre after missing all
last season with a dislocated shoulder.
The second half mirrored the first with the Hawks unable to avoid losing
turnover ball (not always legally) and therefore unable to maintain sustained
pressure. Morley scored a further two tries before outside centre Tim Mennell
showed nifty foot work to grab a conciliation try. The difference between the
two sides was apparent at the end of the match as the Morley lads came off with
sweat soaked shirts. The Ionians team man for man were a more talented outfit
but did not match the work rate or commitment of their opponents.
The Hawks take a rest from league fixtures this weekend as they take on local
rivals Hullensians at Brantingham Park.
