20th October 2007 - Hull Ionians Hawks 40  Sheffield Tigers A  37 -  Yorkshire Premier League

A thrilling match at Brantingham Park saw the lead change hand three times in the last five minutes with eventually the Hawks grabbing victory with the last play of the match.  It was possibly tough on Sheffield who outscored the Hawks seven tries to six but they only managed to convert one whilst Eddie (Johnny) Everett contributed two conversions a penalty and a drop goal.

The Hawks pack was on top throughout with a strong front row of Polar Bear, Kyle Hall and debutant Andrew Hall. In the second row Martin Carew had perhaps his best match ever for the Hawks making yards every time he carried the ball and going over for two tries.  With call ups to the first team leaving the Hawks short of back row players the efforts of the make shift back row were superb.  Hooker Sam Forth stepped in at flanker, Seamus Lewsey moved to number 8 and 17 year old Liam Portz improves with every game.

In the backs Tom Boyle continues to give great service to the threes whilst driving the forwards on and captain Richard Moorhouse was an inspirational captain.

The Hawks scored three tries in the first half, two forward push overs touched down by Martin Carew and Kyle Hall.  Also a flowing move was finished off neatly by winger John Clay, a conversion and drop goal gave the Hawks a half time lead of 20-10.  The Tigers stormed back in the second half and scored two tries to take the lead.  Martin Carew then squeezed in at the corner to retake the lead which was extended by a penalty goal. The Tigers responded with another three-quarter try which was countered when Martin Carew made another break to put Ollie Warks in for a try.

Two late tries by the Tigers, the last one with only a minute to go, seemed to have snatched victory away from the Hawks, but somehow they found the spirit to work their way down the pitch and press on the Tigers line.  With the referee calling last play the Hawks probed until Kyle Hall (joint man of the match with Martin Carew) found a gap near the posts and just reached the line to score the match winning try that the Hawks efforts had deserved.
