Hull Ionians Hawks 63  Scunthorpe A 29

The Hawks finally registered their first win of the season in some style as they beat a strong and determined Scunthorpe side. Great credit goes to the Scunthorpe team for traveling to give the Hawks a fixture when original opponents Morley called off.

For the first time this season the Hawks were able to field a fully fit front row as Scott Wilson and Neil Lyons returned from injury, not only to bolster the scrum but to add an extra dimension around the pitch. New recruit Steve Barton had his best game so far working extremely hard in the second row and Rich Mackay continues to impress at number 8. Scunthorpe had a big competitive pack though and the real difference between the two sides was Ionians speedy backs. Even in blustery conditions not suited for running rugby the pace and handling of the Hawks back was at times sublime. All of the Hawks nine tries were scored by the backs most of them from within their own half. James Ferguson gave an almost faultless display at stand off varying his distribution, scoring a try himself and converting all nine tries. Centres Ryan Girking and Tim Nixon showed pace and power all afternoon with Ryan scoring one try and Tim crossing for four tries to take the man of the match award. Also in the backs Danny Bates fearless running brought him a try and Rob Owen showed his pace from fullback to go over for two tries.

The downside for the Hawks was some worrying defensive frailties especially against the grubber kick through from which Scunthorpe scored three of their four tries. The Hawks will need to maintain this form but tighten up on their defence to stand any chance of success when they take on unbeaten league leaders Wharfedale at Brantingham Park next week.
