October 31 2009 - Hull Ionians Hawks 38 Scarborough A 6
Endersby, Rawson, Slingsby, Waddy, Johnson, Cawthorne, Barrass, Thundercliffe, Andy Rambler, Hall, Carew, Dodge, Towns, Moorhouse, Liddle
Beautiful sunny afternoon, 14 points up
within five minutes and the backs running rampant; break out the Champagne!
Whoa, just a moment, screw the top back on. The opening was impressive. Danny
Waddy had run sublime lines off the shoulder of Mike Cawthorn, scything through
to set up a score for winger Johnson and helping himself to a try, both goaled
by Andy Barrass, but the game then went flat because the Hawks weakness in the
set piece was exposed by the hard working but limited Scarborough pack. They
adopted a simple game plan; spoil and harass and deprive the Hawks backs of any
decent ball and they executed it well. They did it so well in fact that it was
another 20 minutes before Ionians extended their lead when Ally Johnson added a
second try touching down after a powerful run from skipper Moorhouse, who was
playing in the unfamiliar back row position. In the mean time Scarborough had
been rewarded with a penalty and the game had been reduced to uncontested scrums
due to the loss of Albert Thundercliffe who succumbed to injury. The first half
petered out with Scarborough adding a second penalty.
Ionians knew what they had to do, get their hands on the ball. Scarborough knew
they had to prevent them, and they did for the opening minutes of the second
half. The Boro forwards kept the ball in hand and worked their way into the
Hawks 22 only to be penalised for holding on in the tackle. Andy Barrass took a
quick tap and ran and ran and ran on a beautiful break well into the opposition
half before passing to supporting wingman Ben Rawson who carried on to the line
before selflessly giving a return pass to Barrass to score under the posts.
Slingsby drop kicked the conversion. Injury to James Endersby meant a reshuffle
with Rich Moorhouse moving to the more familiar Fullback position and the Hawks
able to introduce another promising youngster from the bench. This lad looks
some prospect. Play became a little scrappy and predictable; Scarborough
dominating the ball through lineout superiority and the Hawks backs over
elaborating with limited possession. They did create one further try when
Moorhouse did the simple thing and just ran hard and straight bursting through
to score. Andy Barrass tagged on a superb conversion from the touchline to
complete a 100% success rate for the afternoon. Steve Slingsby added a drop goal
to the score to bring the game to a close and give the Hawks a fourth win in a
row.
Manager Dave Wilson had a difficult task compiling a team for the game, trawling
the 4 corners of his phone book to pull together 15 fit players. Thanks to the
Ramblers for potentially sacrificing victory in their game to lend us their
hooker and well played Andy. I find it hard to believe that there is only 1 fit
second row and 1 fit back row available to the Hawks with a squad large enough
to rival that at Hull City but there you are. The Hawks have some difficult
fixtures to come before the turn of the year and must hope the current list of
the sick lame and lazy shortens considerably. Difficult choice for MoM for the
management, but they have opted for Andy Barrass for his kicking and the best
try of the day.
