Hull Ionians Hawks  28  Huddersfield Falcons 8  -  Yorkshire Premier League

With injuries in the 1st Team giving call ups to Scott Wilson, Rich MacKay, James Liddle, Lee Birch and Ryan Girking, the Hawks had to dig deep into their reserves, but could still field a surprisingly strong team. 19 year old Ben Davis- Rice made his debut at tight head and Reggie Whittam of Hull University also made his debut in the No. 8 shirt. The team’s spirit was raised by the return from 1st Team duty of Captain Danny Zgoda. After a couple of weeks unavailability Lee Brown strengthened the second row allowing the promising Steve Barton to be given a run in the back row.
Although kicking into stiff breeze the Hawks looked lively and only very robust defence prevented early scores. The deadlock was eventually broken when Ben Rawson nipped through a gap before drawing the fullback and giving an inside scoring pass to man of the match Steve Barton. John Potts converted the try as he was to do all afternoon.
Huddersfield replied immediately as the Hawks failed to deal with the kick off and conceded a penalty in front of the posts. The Hawks returned to the attack and increased their lead just before halftime when Lee Brown made inroads before Ally Forth, now returning to full fitness, showed his pace to burst through and score under the posts.
The lead was further extended in the second half when lively centre Mark MacDaid sliced through and rounded the fullback to score a great individual try. The determined Huddersfield side raised their game and had their best period having concerted pressure on the Hawks line. After many forward drives had been repelled the referee deemed that the ball had touched the whitewash for an unconverted try. The Hawks were having plenty of possession but struggled to break through the rush defence of the Huddersfield backs. The game was made safe when John Potts countered this tactic by pushing through a well judged grubber kick that bounced into the arms of impressive centre Rob Whittam to score his first try for the club.
The Hawks take a rest this weekend but then have arranged a warm up game under the floodlights at Goole on Wednesday 12th November, before they take on local rivals Beverley the following Saturday.
