September 12th 2009 - Hull Ionians Hawks 3 Hull A 78

An inexperienced Hawks Team were no match for a very strong Hull II Team at Brantingham Park on Saturday. Hull dominated throughout and were able to score at will from driving mauls, breaks through the middle and excellent handling along the backline.
To try and take some positives, things will improve. With 23 members of the squad injured or unavailable there are a plethora of players to come back. Also the first of a number of players from the University made their debuts on Saturday with Chris Young showing up well and Eddie Beech unfortunate to get injured early on. Young Andy Barrass at standoff shows great promise and scored the Hawks only points with a penalty kick.
Captain for the day Tim Mennell played well in the centre and showed great character in urging his young team to keep going. Lee Brown also showed up well in the second row. Mike Owen playing his first game for four years at prop showed courage to keep going the full 80 minutes even though heavily outweighed.
Again thanks have to go to Phil Willingham and the Academy helping out with 8 members of the squad to enable the Hawks to raise a side. Although not enjoyable this was great experience for them. Hopefully more members of the team will be available next Saturday as the Hawks have another home league fixture against Ilkley.
