29th September 2007 - Hull Ionians Hawks 37 Driffield A 10
With a full set of backs injured or unavailable the Hawks net was spread wide on Saturday and nine members of the squad made their debut for the season. Ben Rawson flew in from Thailand and took the scrum half berth giving great service to Eddie Everett at stand off. Danny Ullyot and Danny Bates debutised to give extreme pace on each wing. The pack was strengthened by the inclusion of Rich Wilson and Mark Wigham returning from injury. Special mention must go to main sponsor Chris Walker who gave his all in the back row.
The Hawks had the slight edge in the first half and scored two good tries. The first was when Adam Franks won the chase to touch down his own kick through. This was followed when Rob Owen dotted down Eddie Everett’s cross kick ( a la Johnny Wilkinson.) Eddie converted the second try to leave the score 12 - 0 at half time.
Shortly after half time the pack was ‘refreshed’ by the substitution of Polar Bear, and making his club debut Kyle Hall a promising hooker from the University. The lead was extended to 27 - 0 when Ben Rawson and then Rob Owen scored brilliant individual tries.
Driffield teams never lie down though and they came back strongly to work an overlap on the left for their winger to score. Shortly afterwards their dangerous Kiwi centre burst through to just reach the line to give Driffield a sniff of a chance.
The ship was steadied though when Eddie Everett kicked two penalties. The final score line was given a flattering look when prison officer Dave Mawe (also making his debut) showed pace to score a try in the right corner which Eddie converted from the touchline.
Two man of the match’s were awarded. The forwards went to Mark Wigham who was everywhere and made several clean breaks. The backs award went to scrum half Ben Rawson for his immaculate service and control of the game.
The Hawks face a major challenge next week when they travel all the way to Upper Wharfedale for the first time.
