Hull Ionians 22 Broadstreet 50 - National 2 North    Photos      Programme

Hull Ionians disappointing start to the season continued with another humiliating defeat as the inexperience and lack of leadership in open play was woefully exposed by the pace of the Broadstreet backs. Street ran in five tries before the break and two more in the final quarter as they exploited holes in the defence that should never have appeared. Hull Ionians had their chances but lost the ball far too easily and were unable to take any advantage they had of more power in the set piece play that created good attacking positions. It was very frustrating that many times the team’s excellent attacking play and individual skills took play to the line but in contact then lost the ball.
Street took 12 minutes to create their first attack but showed how to finish. Centre Tom Grimes broke through the middle with scrum half Nick Thatcher in support to finish. Straight from the restart an identical break created an overlap for right wing Greg Summers to cross.
Dan Richards converted both, kicking 6 out 7 conversions and 1 out of 2 penalties on a good day with his boot. Hull Ionians took the next restart, Rich Hill, James Liddle then Gary Stephenson making ground with Gary brilliantly keeping the ball alive to set up Danny Hague to race in, Iain Gordon converting. Street attacked again but on the line a superb counter drive led by Adi Longbone allowed Danny Hague to steal the ball and clear the line. Hull Ionians came back with more attacking positions but the ball was given away and chances wasted. The second quarter saw Street given far too much space on the counter attack, not helped by missing touch with clearance kicks, and Thatcher and Summers both took advantage to each score again, securing the four try bonus point in just 28 minutes. Hull Ionians attacks gained one reward, Joe Wright adding a drop goal as the referee played the advantage for offside, but in reply Street showed how it should be done. An attacking line-out was repeatedly driven on with possession retained at each ruck ending in a try for prop Josh Smith to lead 35-10 at the break.
Hull Ionians at least came out fired up after the break and after a good line-out catch and drive off Rich Hill, Tim Nixon raced through the middle with good support seeing Iain Gordon under the posts where he added the goal. Both teams had further chances but at least Hull Ionians defence was now a little tighter, but Street eventually added to their score with a penalty by Richards. Hull Ionians forwards then drove Street off their own scrum, took play to the line but then lost the ball for a Street counter attack to go the full length of the field with Summers pace completing his hat-trick. Street then dropped the ball in their own half and replacement centre Richard Moorhouse was straight in to kick it on for a well taken try. However once again lost ball saw Summers clear again on the overlap for his 4th try while the final minutes saw Hull Ionians at least going for their 4th try for a bonus point which they now at least deserved but on a bad day on the field it was not to be.
