Editors Notes:
· Our EDF Trophy match sees us welcome Altrincham Kersal back to Brantingham Park. Kersal have been in North One for 3 seasons so we played each other home and away in the league in 2004/5. Kersal also came here for a Powergen Cup match 5 weeks after our league game here so this is their 3rd visit to Brantingham Park. Hull Ionians were in their promotion year and won both the home games by a large margin but Kersal faired far better on their home ground making us work hard for a 24-11 victory. Last season Kersal finished midway in North One winning half their matches but this season they have been struggling, their press reports indicating too many injuries leaving them short of experience. We wish them well for the rest of the season in their bid to climb up their league to safety.
· The other fixtures in the cup of interest are Leigh v Preston Grasshoppers; Macclesfield v Beverley; Morley v Caldy; Morpeth v Hull; Tynedale v Darlington Mowden Park & Westoe v Fylde.
· While the 1st XV have been away for the last 2 weeks the Hawks have been providing excellent entertainment on the 1st XV pitch at Brantingham Park with an 81-5 victory over Huddersfield and a 58-7 victory over Beverley. Our recruitment of a larger squad combined with many players recovering from injury is reaping the benefits here and at last posing an interesting challenge for our selectors.
· While talking about the Hawks, today’s programme includes an extra sheet as the Trophy Sponsors EDF request we include a full page advert for them. Three of our Sponsors, Tetley’s, Vulcan Windows and Avocado Catering have contributed to the cost of this and also created space for colour pictures of the 1st XV and the tries by Chris Starling against Morley and Angelo Irving for the Hawks against Beverley.
· With just 6 weeks to Christmas there is an opportunity for you all to support and enjoy many social events at the club. Friday December 14th & 21st we have our Christmas party Nights which are booking up well, so a good night is guaranteed, why not bring your group of friends or office party here too. Then we close the year with a New Years Eve Dinner and disco, which is also an excellent night with a mouth-watering menu. See the web site www.hull-ionians.com, notice boards or contact the office for more details.
· We also intend to have our usual Christmas Eve free and easy party night including a children’s disco. However at present we do not have a volunteer to provide the music for this. Can anyone help? If so please contact Graham Cross or the Office.
· Our referee today is Revis Phillips who we last met up with at Preston two weeks ago. Revis is a Detective Constable with Cleveland Police and has served as a Police Officer for 16 years. Previously in the Royal Army Medical Corps where he played most of his adult Rugby for both the Army Medical Services in the UK and Germany. He played 1st team rugby for Camberley before moving back to Stockton on Tees, his place of birth, where he played rugby for Stockton. An injury at work led him into the world of refereeing in late 1999. Revis is married to Michelle with a young son named Jake who was born in January 2006.
· Our Touch Judges today are Chris Lord & Peter Tolan. Craig Lord was here for our game with Leicester Lions and at Rugby while Peter Tolan is from Coventry and is normally a Touch Judge Coach, the role he was in when we met him at Rugby too.
