Hull
Ionians Girls get off to a flying start.
Despite having only started since Christmas the Hull Ionians Girls rugby union
squad managed to come third out of a field of 12 established teams at this
year’s Pocklington Woman’s Tag Rugby Tournament in May.
With most players aged between 11 and 14 the Hull Ionians girls had a tough task
as they came up against many older and more established sides from across
Yorkshire and the North East. The Hull Ionians girls only started training in
February and draw most of their numbers from South Hunsley and Snaith schools.
With this success under their belts they are looking for new recruits to take
them further and they have already entered into a newly formed girls Rugby Union
league in Yorkshire for next season; this will see them playing clubs such as
Malton & Norton, Doncaster and Bridlington
Hull Ionians’ first game put them up against local rivals, and regulars at the
tournament, Doncaster who certainly had the upper hand in terms of experience.
Although this did not count for much as Hull Ionians ran out winners due to
great speed and handling ability, with the pace of Jess Thompson, Rachel
Deighton and Jade Campey proving pivotal. This was also key in the next game
where they were comfortable winners against Rockliff 3rd’s with some tremendous
work from Rachel Parker, Kassidy Rollin and Kim Ogden.
Malton & Norton were the next opponents for Hull Ionians and proved just too
strong, although Annabelle Davies, and Kirsty Harley did a great job to help
keep Hull Ionians in the game until the end. Although with many Yorkshire
players in the Malton side it was a great effort by the girls. The next game
Rockliff 2nd’ s saw the Hull Ionians girls getting back into winning ways in a
game that contained some tremendous tries. The last game was against Pocklington
where a solid win put Hull Ionians through to the semi- finals which was just
rewards for the effort and skill that all the girls demonstrated in their first
ever tournament.
Their semi-final put them up against Rockliff’s 1st team and it proved to be a
closely fought match right until the end. Rockliff took an early lead but Hull
Ionians hit back using their substitutes wisely to only trail by 2 tries at half
time. The girls came out in a determined manner for the second half and a great
breakaway try by coach Claire Montague gave real hope of reaching the final, but
two more tries by Rockliff put the game beyond reach despite Hull Ionians’ Gemma
French scoring an impressive consolation try with the last play of the game.
Credit must go to all the girls who played tremendously well throughout the day
and all showed great potential. There will certainly be a lot more still to come
from this young Hull Ionians side.
